Network audit

We offer comprehensive network audits, helping organizations identify and document their network resources and configurations. In many instances a network audit can uncover network mis-configurations which can prevent future problems. At the conclusion of a network audit , we will present a report, documenting our findings, short and long term recommendations, and a suggested plan of action.

Network Security Review

We can help businesses to secure their networks, systems, applications, data and other resources by undertaking a Security Position Assessment (SPA). This assessment will identify the current level of security readiness in your company, and evaluate the effectiveness of existing security measures, policies and response mechanisms.

Planning for disaster

Disaster planning can be affordable even for the small business, since we have developed disaster recovery plan (DRP) outlines that make it easy to get started. We help you understand the actual effects various types of disasters will have on your business. Then we develop a concise step by step plan with easy to follow procedures so you can be readily prepared for the most common disasters.

Virtual Private Network (VPN) Consulting and Support

Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Metroplex Tech can install a VPN remote access system that enables you or your staff to access files and documents from home or while on the road. Securely and efficiently.

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and literally creates a secure encrypted data link tunnel between any two points over any connection.

VPN can revolutionize the way you work by allowing full secure access to your business office computers and network remotely from anywhere with an Internet connection.

    • Link remote offices together using the Internet
    • High-Level IPSec data encryption
    • Use ADSL, Cable Modem or ISDN links to the Internet
    • Scaleable - Support for multiple simultaneous tunnels
    • Flexible - Remote offices can be set up and moved quickly
    • Temporary Remote Links can be deployed efficiently
    • Keeps data confidential (encryption)
    • Authenticates the identities of two parties communicating
    • Safeguards the identities of communicating parties (tunneling)
    • Ensures data is accurate and in its original form
    • Guards against data being sent over and over

Because virtual private networks are safe and secure businesses can adopt VPN to connect remote offices over the internet. This saves a considerable amount of money when compared to implementing a dedicated connection between sites. Staff at remote sites will be able to access data which is held on computer and servers in central offices as if they were connected directly to the network.

Remote access VPN over the internet is not only feasible - it's safe! - thanks to VPN security and encryption. At Metroplex Tech we only use the best equipment to ensure that your private connection remains private.

Another obvious use of a VPN setup is for remote & home working. VPN security allows staff to work while out of town or from home while providing them with the same access to data as if they were in the office.

Some of the Benefits of VPN include:

    • Your staff can connect to your internal network and have access to files in exactly the same way they would as if they were in the office.
    • With VPN security, your users can have secure access to their email and business documents from anywhere in the world. All they need is an internet connection.
    • VPN security is of the very highest technology. Hackers cannot access the data while it is transmitted and they cannot connect to your VPN protected network. Several layers of security are used to establish VPN encryption.
    • Your VPN users don't have to remember any passwords or login ID's making it easy to connect and use.
    • There is no need for an expensive leased line when connecting offices. A relatively low cost ADSL or broadband connection is all that's needed at each end.
    • Save on the cost of couriers or postage between offices. Virtual private networks effectively reduce the amount of paperwork which has to be moved between sites manually.
    • Working from home can save on staff travel time. More and more organizations now allow their staff to work from home where their roles can be performed just as efficiently from home as it can be in the office.

They key functions which make VPN secure are the following:

    • Authentication - Ensuring the communication is from a trusted source
    • Access Control - Preventing unauthorized users from accessing the network
    • Confidentiality - Preventing the reading or copying of data as it travels across the public network
    • Data integrity - Ensuring the data has not been tampered with as it travels across the public network

More and more companies are finding that a traveling network is a cost-effective network. Allowing employees the ability to work from home or on the road increases productivity and reduces time lost due to absences. VPN enables secure encrypted connections between authorized offsite computers and office networks, allowing companies to maintain flexible, secure workforces.

How does VPN work?

A VPN is a secure, private tunnel between two or more devices across the internet. A VPN device can be anything from a standard PC with VPN software installed on it to a dedicated hardware device called a VPN router.

At the very basic VPN allows computers at different locations to communicate with each other in a safe and secure manner. This can be two computers at different offices or thousands of computers on different networks around the world.

VPN is secure because it employs very strong encryption to protect your data as it travels across the internet. Even if a hacker or snooper were to try to eavesdrop on the communication they wouldn't be able to understand it because all the data is so highly encrypted. VPN devices continuously monitor their data traffic in very complex ways that ensure information is never altered while traveling across the Internet.

VPN clients and servers

A VPN server is the piece of hardware or software acting as the gateway into an entire network or just a single computer. In most scenarios it is always on and listening for VPN clients to connect to it and authenticate.

A VPN Client is most often a software program but can also be hardware as well (usually another VPN router). The client initiates a conversation with the server and attempts to authenticate and log on. If authentication is successful then the VPN client and VPN server are able to communicate as if they were on the same network. At this point they are on the same virtual network.

VPN Protocols

There are two major protocols (or languages) that VPN technology employs to communicate. Microsoft uses PPTP or Point to Point Tunneling Protocol and IPSec - Internet Protocol Security.

PPTP has good encryption and also features authentication for verifying a user ID and password. IPSec is purely an encryption model and is much safer but does not include authentication routines. A third standard, L2TP is IPSec with authentication built in. Microsoft operating systems also support L2TP.

VPN can use IPSec, 3DES or AES encryption ensuring maximum security and can communicate IPSec and IKE protocols. Dedicated VPN appliances and products allow for a cost-effective, easy-to-manage remote access solution for small, medium and large enterprises.
